case study
At its UK facility, CNH Industrial manufactures agricultural tractors and needed to secure the traceability of its front assemblies — large steel components that can be either machined or painted.
Until then, part identification relied on adhesive labels carrying a QR code with key manufacturing data.
This approach introduced several vulnerabilities on the shop floor: label loss, misassignment to the wrong assembly, identification errors, and data gaps mid-production.
The challenge was therefore to implement a reliable, long-term marking solution — without adding complexity to the operator’s workflow or requiring a heavy installation footprint on large-format parts.
Front assemblies are large-format components, which complicates the integration of a fixed marking station at the workstation.
– The surfaces to be identified can be either machined or painted.
The marking therefore needed to remain legible and high-contrast across varying surface conditions.
– Manufacturing data depended on an adhesive label carrying a QR code.
If it peeled off or was applied to the wrong assembly, traceability was no longer secured.
– In a manual production line, the solution had to remain straightforward for the operator and compatible with the pace of the shop floor.

The selected solution is a L-MOOV portable laser marking machine, paired with a barcode reader.
This approach delivers a high-contrast, high-quality QR code while eliminating the need for a large enclosure poorly suited to oversized components.
The operator scans the data, then the QR code is marked directly via laser onto the machined face or a painted surface.
This scan-based data capture eliminates manual re-entry and reduces the risk of input errors.
Direct part marking removes dependency on labels and permanently embeds the identification data into the component.
The portable form factor of the L-MOOV delivers the flexibility required in a manual environment.
It enables marking on bulky assemblies while maintaining marking quality fully compatible with traceability requirements.

– Enhanced traceability reliability through direct part marking
– Reduced data entry errors via operator scan-based data capture
– Eliminated risks associated with lost or misapplied labels
With this approach, CNH Industrial replaces an identification method dependent on adhesive media with direct laser marking — more reliable and better suited to large steel components.
The combination of scan-based data capture and direct part marking secures data integrity at the point of entry into the production flow and reinforces traceability continuity throughout manufacturing.
